Whether on or off the racetrack, motorsport is teamwork. Mechanics, engineers and drivers work side by side towards shared success. But the right partners are also crucial. With Schaeffler, Marco Wittmann has had a reliable first-rate partner at his side for several years, and represents the corporation, its values and its philosophies at the racetracks of the world – and beyond.
Marco Wittmann joined the Schaeffler family in 2019 and competes in the DTM with the #GreenMachine. Born in Fürth, Marco Wittmann grew up just a few kilometres away from the HQ of the automobile and industrial supplier in Herzogenaurach. “The regionality and origin alone mean there is no better partner than Schaeffler from my point of view,” said Marco Wittmann. “We have already celebrated many successes together and I am looking forward to being a brand ambassador for such a large company with international renown. The fact that we are continuing the partnership in the DTM in 2021 is a great honour for me, and I hope there will be many more shared years with Schaeffler.”
After Marco Wittmann did battle for points in the Schaeffler-branded BMW M4 DTM in 2019 and 2020, he will race in the BMW M6 GT3 of Walkenhorst Motorsport in 2021 – and the distinctive green and white Schaeffler paintwork will stay the same. But being Schaeffler brand ambassador means much more to Marco Wittmann than simply representing the company on the racetrack.
And when it comes to sustainability, Marco Wittmann and Schaeffler made positive headlines with the collaborative ‘Plant a Tree’ initiative in 2020. Under the motto ‘Score a point, plant a tree’, Marco Wittmann planted a tree for every DTM point that he picked up in 2020. As a result, a total of 111 trees were planted in collaboration with Schaeffler. This project will be continued in 2021.
“Schaeffler is a company that is very socially engaged,” said Marco Wittmann. “The projects that we were able to bring into being together away from the racetrack last year demonstrate this. These projects are really close to my heart and I am looking forward to more of these kinds of actions in the future.”
Passionate about motor racing, striving for perfection, paying attention to detail: values that do not just apply perfectly to Marco Wittmann, but which are also deeply rooted in the DNA of Akrapovič. The company was founded in Slovenia in 1991 by former motorbike racer Igor Akrapovič and has since established itself as one of the leading manufacturers of top-quality exhaust systems for motorbikes and high-performance cars. Marco Wittmann has been a brand ambassador and part of the Akrapovič family since 2014, the year in which he won his first DTM title. “It is a great honour for me to have been a brand ambassador for Akrapovič for so many years,” says Marco Wittmann. “It is a superb partnership and Akrapovič has already provided me with loads of interesting insights throughout our long-standing partnership.”
Regular visits to the Akrapovič factory in Slovenia are a bonus associated with Marco Wittmann’s ambassador role – but the top-quality exhaust systems produced by the company are the real highlight. As brand ambassador, Marco Wittmann is always able to make use of the newest and most exclusive Akrapovič products, and he is allowed to test the prototypes of the top-quality exhaust systems on his own cars. In 2019, a slip-on line exhaust system made its global debut on Marco Wittmann’s BMW Z4 M40i – a moment that the driver from Franconia still regards as a highlight from the seven-year partnership.
“The sound is a really important part of a car for me, and when I start my car in the morning, the sound of the Akrapovič exhaust systems really puts a smile on my face,” says Marco Wittmann. Marco Wittmann is also able to put his trust entirely in the company from Slovenia when it comes to his company car. “The exhaust systems have an important role to play in motor racing, particularly with regard to performance optimisation and weight reduction, which is where Akrapovič excels with very high levels of quality.”
