The 2022 DTM season has started: Portimão in Portugal was the venue for this weekend’s season-opener. For Marco Wittmann, this marked the first races with his new Green Machine, the #11 BMW M4 GT3. After a difficult Saturday, he made an impressive comeback on Sunday with fourth place in race two.

Wittmann and the Walkenhorst Motorsport team nearly spent an entire week at the ‘Autódromo Internacional do Algarve’ in the south of Portugal. On Tuesday and Wednesday, two days of testing were used for the final season preparations. On Thursday, Wittman and some DTM driver colleagues then went to the beach – to go surfing with the new Schaeffler family member Sebastian Steudtner.

Following Friday’s free practice sessions, things then became serious. Saturday, however, was a difficult day for Wittmann and he had to settle with P16 in the closely-fought first qualifying. In race one he initially was able to move up the field but then had to come to the pit box due to a technical issue.

Sunday brought new opportunities. Wittmann and his Green Machine were in sixth position on the grid for race two and, during the race, he improved to fourth place with great overtaking manoeuvres and set his sights on the podium. This did not work out in the end, but the BMW M Motorsport works driver was still happy with fourth.

“After a difficult start and the DNF in Saturday’s race, finishing fourth on Sunday was a nice conclusion to the weekend,” Wittmann said. “For some time, I was hoping to be able to fight for the podium but in the end we did not have quite the pace of the top 3. But this is nevertheless a result we can build on, and the points are valuable for the season. For us it is about understanding the new BMW M4 GT3 better and better under all conditions, and to bring the car into the perfect performance window for the races as well as for qualifying. And we are heading into the right direction. Now I am looking forward to the weekend at the Lausitzring.”

Round two of the DTM season will be held at the Lausitzring from 20th to 22nd May.
