Eventful Saturday race at the Red Bull Ring

The fifth race weekend of the 2021 season got off to a somewhat more turbulent start than planned for Marco Wittmann. At the end of the 55-minute race in Spielberg, the Walkenhorst Motorsport driver crossed the finish line seventh.

Qualifying took place in glorious sunshine on Saturday morning and was very satisfying for the man from Fürth. He started the 55-minute race at the Red Bull Ring, in the Styria region of Austria, from seventh place on the grid. After a chaotic start, he came in for an early pit stop on lap five. Wittmann was then involved in various battles with Mercedes driver Vincent Abril and Red Bull Racing’s Alex Albon. The latter was breathing down Marco’s neck for several laps before eventually managing to pass him. In the end, the Walkenhorst Motorsport driver came home seventh in the Green Machine – the same position he started in.

Marco Wittmann (#11 BMW M6 GT3, Team Walkenhorst Motorsport, grid position: 7th, race result: 7th, Drivers’ Championship: 4th, 100 pts.):

“It was a rather eventful and difficult day for us. Unfortunately, we did not get everything together in qualifying. With that in mind, seventh place was a decent starting position, but obviously not the best. The early stages actually went very well for us. However, we did not have the pace to stick with the Mercedes and Ferrari drivers after the pit stop. The success weight obviously hampered us a little and prevented us from making the most of the strength we actually have at this circuit. We must now make the most of the situation again, and I believe we did some good damage limitation today. We hope to take another step forward in tomorrow’s race.”

The action continues tomorrow with race two in Spielberg, when the goal will once again be a top-ten finish and to score valuable points towards the DTM championship.
