The seventh race of the DTM season saw Marco Wittmann give another strong performance to score more points in the drivers’ championship.
In qualifying, Wittmann displayed the same level of performance that secured victory at Zolder, putting the #11 BMW M6 GT3 third on the grid with an outstanding lap. It was clear that the additional weight that he had to carry in the race after his Zolder triumph would make it difficult to defend the spot on the podium.
However, Wittmann never gave up the fight, coming in for an early mandatory pit stop and crossing the finish line in sixth position after 40 laps. He scored eleven points, including one point for the qualifying result, as a guest driver finished ahead of him. Wittmann remains fourth in the drivers’ standings.
“Overall, that was a solid day for us,” said Wittmann. “Qualifying went surprisingly well with third place but we already knew that the 25 kilos of extra weight would make things difficult for us in the race. We struggled with tyre wear and a somewhat slower pace, but our damage limitation worked well. It would be good if we could record another result like this tomorrow.”
