The first race of the 2021 DTM season went positively for Marco Wittmann. The Walkenhorst Motorsport driver secured ninth place at the end of the 50-minute race in Monza, Italy.

Wittmann finished 15th in the qualifying session on Saturday morning in his BMW M6 GT3. This result came as no surprise to the team but they had hoped to do better. After an exciting start to the 2021 DTM season, he was initially able to hold on to his position. The DTM driver from Fürth was then able to move gradually up through the field. His Walkenhorst Motorsport team completed the mandatory pit stop on lap eight and he came back out in 13th place.  Wittmann was subsequently able to emerge triumphant from a thrilling battle with T3 Motorsport driver Esteban Muth. After some more exciting duels, he crossed the finishing line in ninth place after completing 28 race laps, scoring his first points of the season.

Marco Wittmann (#11 BMW M6 GT3, Team Walkenhorst Motorsport, Grid: 15th, Race: 9th, 2 points):

“That was a very satisfying first race day for us in the DTM season 2021. 15th place in qualifying did not provide us with the best starting position. We produced a strong racing performance regardless. The Walkenhorst Motorsport team did a great job. Good preparation, a fast pit stop and some exciting battles all helped us to claim ninth place. That means we have scored our first points together in the first race. We can build on that and we hope that we will take another step forward in Sunday’s race.”

The second race of the weekend will take place tomorrow in Monza, Italy. The two-time DTM champion will once again be battling for some important points for this season.
