Turbulent Sunday race in Zolder

The second race in Zolder ended on a more positive note for Marco Wittmann. He finished eighth in his Schaeffler BMW M4 DTM, scoring four points in the drivers’ championship.

Wittmann had only finished 15th in the qualifying session on Saturday morning. He was able to defend his position at the start and close up on Auer ahead of him. The safety car appeared as early as lap two, after an accident between Jonathan Aberdein, Fabio Scherer and Robin Frijns. He was able to manoeuvre into ninth place thanks to a good restart. The race featured numerous incidents and safety car phases that reduced the field to ten cars.

He moved into P9 after a pit stop on lap 13. He was able to defend this position for the remainder of the race. Ferdinand Habsburg was forced to head for the pits due to technical problems with his WRT Audi, pushing Marco up to eighth place. The BMW Team RMG driver and his “Green Machine” crossed the line in this position.

Sunday’s race in Zolder saw a total of three BMW M4 DTMs reach the top 10.

Marco Wittmann (#11 Schaeffler BMW M4 DTM, BMW Team RMG, Grid: 15th, Race: 8th, Drivers’ standings: 7th, 95 points):

“That was a very difficult weekend for me. Unfortunately, we were not competitive as you can see from the data. We weren’t able to get going in qualifying or the race. In that sense, finishing tenth yesterday and eighth today is pretty acceptable, while being disappointing at the same time. In the end, I am hoping that it will look better for Hockenheim.”

The thrilling season final of the DTM season 2020 will take place in Hockenheim in two weeks.
