After failing to finish yesterday’s race, Sunday was a far more positive experience for Marco Wittmann. In the end, the BMW Team RMG driver ended race 14 of the 2020 DTM season in eighth place.
In Sunday morning’s qualifying, Wittmann was tenth fastest in the Schaeffler BMW M4 DTM. After an eventful start to the race, he was initially able to hold his position. The safety car then made an appearance, following a crash involving Audi driver Robin Frijns. Wittmann came in for a pit stop during this phase. However, it did not count as his mandatory pit stop, which BMW Team RMG completed on lap 27. Wittmann re-joined the race in eighth place. Audi driver Nico Müller was hot on his heels at the end of the race, but Wittmann was able to keep him at bay and defend eighth place through to the finish.
In total, four BMW M4 DTM finished in the top ten in Sunday’s race at “Circuit Zolder”.
Marco Wittmann (#11 Schaeffler BMW M4 DTM, BMW Team RMG, Grid: 10th, Race: 8th, Drivers’ standings: 7th, 90 points):
“In a crazy race, which was mainly influenced by the safety car phase, I was basically the best-placed car that had not stopped previously. As such, I can be really happy with my race and our pace. For me personally, the safety car was a bit unlucky. After that, there was not a lot more I could have done.”
The 2020 DTM season continues next weekend with the penultimate round in Zolder, Belgium.
