After his third-place finish in Saturday’s race at the Nürburgring, Marco Wittmann was unable to return to the rostrum on Sunday. In the twelfth race of the 2020 DTM season, he finished in fifth place with his Schaeffler BMW M4 DTM.
The BMW Team RMG driver finished the morning qualifying session in fifth place. The race once again took place in ideal conditions and he was able to battle up to fourth place just after the start. He fell back to seventh place due to the late pit stop on lap 18. However, he was able to move back to where he had started from and proceeded to cross the finishing line in fifth place.
The result saw him score ten championship points. A total of four BMW M4 DTMs reached the top ten.
Marco Wittmann (#11 Schaeffler BMW M4 DTM, BMW Team RMG, Grid: 5th, Race: 5th, Drivers’ standings: 7., 86 points):
“I had a good start and a good opening stage in which I was able to overtake Ferdinand Habsburg. I was actually pretty happy to be driving behind the front three. Unfortunately, we lost the race a bit due to the pit stop strategy when Sheldon overtook us with his undercut. It is a bit disappointing to give your all during the first stint and then lose a place during the pit stop. Third place yesterday, fifth today – all in all, that’s OK.”
The DTM is now taking a short break. Racing continues in three weeks at Zolder (Belgium) with the seventh event of the season.
