Marco Wittmann has secured another podium in the first race of the second DTM race weekend at the Nürburgring. After a turbulent race, he crossed the finish line in third place in his Schaeffler BMW M4 DTM.

The qualifying session on Saturday morning took place in brilliant sunshine and ideal conditions. He claimed sixth place on the grid to start a spectacular race. Wittmann was able to move up a place right away behind the safety car. Two of the three safety car periods were ideal for him and his BMW Team RMG as he worked his way gradually up through the field. Wittmann was in second place for a while. However, he was unable to hold off René Rast after the final restart, slipping back to third place. He was able to defend that position until the end of the race to score some important championship points.

It was a successful Saturday for the entire team. A total of five BMW M4 DTMs reached the top ten.

Marco Wittmann (#11 Schaeffler BMW M4 DTM, BMW Team RMG, Grid: 6th, Race: 3rd, Drivers’ standings: 7th, 76 points):

“Of course, that was a very positive day. I started from sixth place and finished third. I had a good start. The clutch problems from last week seem to have been dealt with. It was an exciting race with three safety car periods. We were able to benefit from two of those to move up a few places but then the final safety car probably cost us the second place. It looked like being in second place at the restart put us at a disadvantage. Exactly the same thing happened to René in the preceding safety car period. So it’s a bit of a shame but third place is absolutely OK. Reaching the podium again from our starting position is a success.”

Wittmann secured the 36th podium of his career. The twelfth race of the 2020 DTM season will take place at the Nürburgring on Sunday.
