Rocket start and fighting spirit key to podium

There it is: Marco Wittmann’s first podium of the 2020 DTM season! In Sunday’s race at the Lausitzring, the BMW Team RMG driver gave a magnificent display in the Schaeffler BMW M4 DTM to finish third and claim a spot on the rostrum. It was also BMW’s 300th podium in the DTM.

The signs were not particularly promising for Wittmann and his fellow BMW drivers in qualifying on Sunday morning. Despite being the best-placed BMW, he still had to settle for seventh place on the grid. However, he soon set about plotting his route to the podium from that position.

The first key to achieving that goal was Wittmann’s rocket start. Within a matter of just a few corners, he was already up to third place, a position he held on to until lap 34, when he initially dropped back to fourth place. However, then came the second key – Wittmann’s fighting spirit. He showed great determination in the final stage of the race and regained third place on the penultimate lap.

Marco Wittmann (#11 Schaeffler BMW M4 DTM, BMW Team RMG, Grid: 7th, Race: 3rd, Drivers’ standings: 6th, 28 points):

“I had an extremely good start and a super first lap, after which I was already up to third place. I then battled with Robin Frijns and René Rast for the lead. I finally got past Robin on the penultimate lap. Nonetheless, you have to say that the gap to the Audis is still very big in qualifying and in the race. Third place is a decent enough result. However, our goal is to challenge for titles, and we are a long way off doing that at the moment. We must work hard to close that gap.”

Wittmann returns to action in the DTM this coming weekend. The third event of the season will once again take place at the Lausitzring – this time on the longer layout.
