The wait is over: with Saturday’s race at Spa, the DTM season finally kicked off after the Corona break. But the start into the racing year went anything but smoothly for BMW and Marco Wittmann.
After starting eighth on the grid, the double DTM champion fought his way up to fifth place in the first stint – which meant that he was the best-placed BMW driver at times. But after the pit stop nothing worked in the heat of Spa. Just outside the top 10, Marco finished eleventh.
“The result is obviously disappointing. The first stint went well and I was able to work my way past my BMW colleagues. The tyres also felt good. Unfortunately, nothing went right in the second stint. So soon after the race, I cannot say what that was down to. We must analyse what happened.”
Tomorrow Marco and his BMW colleagues already have the chance for a better team result. Race two of the DTM at Spa is on the agenda. Then hopefully with points for the two-time champion.
