The 2019 DTM season is over. Marco Wittmann has secured third place in the drivers’ standings and now heads for the winter break . A drive-through penalty for the two-time DTM champion meant that he had no chance of recording a top finish in the final race of the year.
The safety car and an interrupted race: The finale at the Hockenheimring kept the fans entertained. However, the constant downpour restricted visibility and turned the 18th race of the season into a lottery. Wittmann had started the final race from fifth place on the grid and soon moved into a promising position. However, the race was then interrupted after a host of incidents, restarting after a short break. Wittmann and his BMW Team RMG decided to head for the pits just a few laps after the restart. After the pit stop, race control classified it as “unsafe release” and imposed a drive-through penalty on Wittmann. This pushed him a long way back and he crossed the line in twelfth place.
Nonetheless, he still had reason to be cheerful. After a season of ups – including four wins – and downs, Wittmann secured third place in the drivers’ standings. “That was a race to forget,” said Wittmann. “But the season is over now and I did reach the podium with third place in the overall standings. Being happy with that is what counts. We can be proud of that. Compared to the competition, we didn’t always have the best package. That means that third place is a nice way to round off a season of ups and downs.”
