Marco Wittmann delivered a great recovery performance in his Schaeffler BMW M4 DTM at the 15th race of the 2019 DTM season. After having to be content with eleventh place in qualifying on Saturday morning, the 2014 and 2016 champion displayed fighting spirit to claim third position.
Wittmann enjoyed a near-perfect start, battling his way up to eighth place on the first lap. A drive-through penalty for Audi driver Nico Müller saw him move up one more place. On lap 20, Wittmann was still on cold tyres after his successful pit stop and was forced to let an attack-minded Jamie Green pass him.
As the race progressed, he was able to put Green under pressure before overtaking him to reclaim that lost place. He was rewarded for another top driving performance with a sixth podium finish of the season. His BMW Team RMG team-mate Bruno Spengler was able to celebrate alongside him after finishing in second place.
“You have to be pleased with finishing third after starting from eleventh position,” says Wittmann. “We drove a good race, with a good strategy and a good pit stop. It is great for the BMW Team RMG to have two drivers on the podium at our home race.”
Wittmann remains the best-placed BMW driver in the overall standings, in third place with 182 points. The second race at the Nürburgring starts on Sunday at 13:30. The excitement starts at 10:25, when Wittmann will be battling to secure the ideal grid position in qualifying for the 16th race of the season.
