Narrowly missing out on the podium

Marco Wittmann fought like a lion in Saturday’s DTM race at the Lausitzring – in the end he narrowly missed being on the podium and finished in fourth place. With this result he has reached a milestone – and collected more than 1,000 points in his DTM career.

In Saturday’s qualifying Wittmann’s Schaeffler BMW M4 DTM finished fifth, and he was the highest-placed BMW driver. With a great start, the BMW Team RMG driver took third place in the first few metres of the race. When leading Audi driver René Rast slowed down on lap seven, Wittmann took second place. After 13 laps he headed into the pit for the mandatory pit stop, which BMW Team RMG completed in a fast 6.5 seconds.

Back on track with cold tyres, Wittmann lost a position to Robin Frijns and was then in third place. He gave it his all, but could not keep the Audi of Mike Rockenfeller behind him in the closing stages. After 34 laps, he crossed the finish line as the best BMW driver in fourth place.

“The result is a little disappointing“, said Wittmann. “We are really trying to get everything out of the package, but, unfortunately, it is simply not enough at the moment. Sure, we cut the gap at the top a little, thanks to René Rast’s retirement. However, to really be in contention in the title race, we have to finish ahead of our rivals.”

Now Wittmann and BMW Team RMG continue to work hard and focused. The goal: to be back in the top positions in tomorrow’s second qualifying session and race.
