After the two foreign race weekends in Assen and at Brands Hatch, the DTM returns to Germany and the Lausitzring, where the 2019 season enters the finishing straight and the series celebrates a very special milestone. Sunday’s race will be the 500th in the history of the popular touring car series. Marco Wittmann could also reach another milestone in his career at the Lausitzring: The German could become only the eighth driver ever to reach the magical 1,000-point mark.
The Franconian has amassed 994 points from his 106 DTM races so far. Wittmann did have the opportunity to score his 1,000th point on the Sunday at Brands Hatch. However, as has so often been the case this season, Wittmann was denied a second good result following an outstanding Saturday. All four of his victories this season have come on a Saturday, while he has achieved just one podium finish on a Sunday. This discrepancy resulted in championship leader René Rast again extending his lead after race two at Brands Hatch to 59 points. Despite this, Wittmann knows that giving up is not an option.
Wittmann is determined to close the gap to the top of the overall standings at the Lausitzring, where he wrapped up his first DTM title back in 2014.
“This weekend, the focus is clearly on bouncing back in the title race,” says Wittmann. “We will be flat out there again, and I believe the approach has always been very good at the recent race weekends. This allowed us to score a lot of points in Assen and on the Saturday at Brands Hatch. I think that has to be our approach again in Lausitz: Go at it full throttle and make sure we are on the mark in terms of performance. We still have three race weekends to come, and we have to try to get the most out of them.”
DTM TV partner, SAT.1, will broadcast live from 13:00 on Saturday and Sunday. The races start at 13:30 on both days.
