Although the last race weekend in Zolder did not go as planned for Marco Wittmann, the two-time DTM champion is in good spirits ahead of the trip to Misano, where the fifth and sixth races of the season will take place. Wittmann will be celebrating a very special anniversary at the “Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli”: Sunday’s race will be the 100th race in the DTM for the Franconian driver, who would ideally like to celebrate this anniversary with a podium finish. He certainly has plenty of grounds for optimism.
“We have made a very good start, with very good performances,” says Wittmann. We haven’t had luck on our side in every race but I think that we can be satisfied with the season so far. Now we are hoping to have good pace in Misano.”
The performances produced by the 29-year-old driver in the BMW M4 DTM thus far underline his ambitions. Wittmann has started three of the first four races of 2019 from the front row and he is in third place in the drivers’ championship. This puts his in touching distance of the leader, his brand team-mate Philipp Eng.
Although the DTM had visited Misano last year, this trip to Italy represents uncharted territory in many respects for the DTM drivers. “I think that daytime driving in Misano will represent the biggest change,” says Wittmann. “The night-time conditions in the rain were really difficult last year. That means that it will be something new for us, in a sense.”
The DTM TV partner SAT.1 will be broadcasting live from 13:00 on Saturday and Sunday. On both days, the races begin at 13:30.
