Marco Wittmann heads away from Zolder with mixed feelings. On the positive side: the racing pace of the Schaeffler BMW M4 DTM was there at all times. And pole position was up on the leaderboard as the qualifying session for the first race drew to a close on Saturday. However, in the race the two-time champion didn’t enjoy much luck during the heat of the battle.
A safety car phase wrecked any plans the two-time DTM champion had made in Saturday’s race. Sunday also did not go completely as planned. Seventh place in qualifying – 13th position in the race. Wittmann could have recorded a better result. However, after unfortunate contact with Robin Frijns and the subsequent imposition of a drive-through penalty, race two was effectively over the for the champion.
“We had a good pace again but the accident with Robin Frijns resulted in a drive-through penalty that cost me the race. I was trying to get past him. He skidded sideways on turn one and came over to my racing line. I was lapping faster on fresh tyres and hit him, which spun him around. From my point of view, there was hardly anything I could have done to avoid it. Of course, that was a shame,” concludes Wittmann after the race.
But everyone who knows Wittmann also knows: he will be back – stronger than ever before. His next chance to record a top result will come on 8th and 9th June. Those are the dates for races five and six in Misano.
