Pole position and race win: Marco Wittmann made a dream start to the new DTM season. The 2014 and 2016 champion produced a flawless performance in unsettled conditions on the wet and slippery asphalt in Hockenheim. Fastest in qualifying – first across the finish line in the race: A perfect start to the DTM weekend.
Wittmann was making his first appearance in the new green and white livery of his new premium partner, Schaeffler. His BMW M4 DTM has 100 hp more under the bonnet than last year’s car – and Wittmann unleashed all that power in qualifying. He rocketed to the fastest lap time in the Hockenheim rain. The rain was unable to dampen Wittmann’s spirits in the race either: He led from start to finish in the Schaeffler BMW M4 DTM and ultimately sealed a convincing victory after a dominant display. This was Wittmann’s 12th victory in the DTM.
The BMW Team RMG driver is a specialist when it comes to historic wins. Back in 2014, he claimed the first victory with the new BMW M4 DTM in Hockenheim. Now, at the opening round of the 2019 season, he has added the first success of the new turbo era in the DTM to his long list of achievements. This was the first time a turbo engine had powered a BMW car in the DTM – and Wittmann celebrated the occasion from the top step of the podium.
Race two of the turbo era takes place on Sunday, and Wittmann is hungry to shine again.
