Major disappointment for Marco Wittmann: after a promising qualifying session, the two-time DTM champion started the second race of the season from sixth place. However, difficult weather conditions had a negative impact on Wittmann’s race. He finished out of the points in 13th position.
Rain came and went throughout the race, leaving teams and drivers unsure of how to deal with the conditions and there were numerous incidents on the circuit. Wittmann had started on wet-weather tyres but stopped to change to slicks after the first lap. He returned to the pits in his BMW Driving Experience M4 DTM when it started to rain again, switching back to wet-weather tyres. Despite a good performance, he was unable to break into the top ten.
“I had a fantastic start and I was in second place when Loic Duval came from behind and drove into the side of my car. That caused some tyre damage and ruined my race early on. We did change tyres at the right time when the rain started but I was already too far behind. Congratulations to Joel on the win! He can throw a party now.”
However, Wittmann’s BMW team-mate Joel Eriksson was able to celebrate after driving a faultless race to claim his first DTM win. Guest driver Alex Zanardi also impressed with an outstanding performance, crossing the line in fifth place. The eighth race weekend of the season takes place in two weeks when Marco Wittmann will be aiming for points once again at the Nürburgring.
