Marco Wittmann gave a strong performance at the first night race in the history of the DTM, recording another top ten finish at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli. The 2014 and 2016 DTM champion completed a turbulent race in ninth place.
After a difficult qualifying session on a wet circuit, Wittmann started from 15th position and battled his way swiftly and courageously to the top ten in his BMW Driving Experience M4 DTM. He was then involved in a thrilling duel with Audi driver Pilot Mike Rockenfeller and managed to reach seventh place. However, heavy traffic on the track saw him spin after being clipped by Robin Frijns and hopes of a top ten finish receded. After multiple safety car periods and a number of incidents on the track, the BMW driver once again battled his way up through the field and finished the first race of the weekend in ninth place.
“It was an exciting race,” said Wittmann. “I had an extremely good start and an extremely good first lap which allowed me to move up to seventh place. My pace at the start was really good. Starting on wet-weather tyres was the right decision. The car did take a few bumps on the early laps. My car was suffering a bit and that meant it was quite difficult to drive, resulting in me spinning. That effectively left me in last place. The safety car periods worked in our favour in the end. I made up a few places at the restarts. Scoring two points after starting from 15th place is OK but if you look at the position I was in, it is a bit disappointing. In general, it was a very chaotic race.”
Marco will be able to resume the hunt for points tomorrow, when the second Misano night race starts at 22:30.
