After finishing ninth in Saturday’s race, Marco Wittmann turned it up a notch during the second Brands Hatch event to claim fifth place in his BMW Driving Experience M4 DTM. Just as on Saturday, the 2014 and 2016 DTM champion had recorded the ninth-fastest time in qualifying.

The twelfth race of the season started in turbulent fashion and Wittmann was able to use this to his advantage. After a pit stop on lap five, the BMW driver worked his way forward gradually to fifth place. He was able to mount a solid defence of this position and collected ten points in the overall standings.

“All things considered, I am pretty pleased,” said Wittmann. “I think that the whole weekend showed that we are not quite at Mercedes’ pace. That was reflected in the qualifying results. We made the best of it. We started well and we were pretty lucky with all the incidents, that was a close-run thing. We had a good race strategy and, above all, a really fast pit stop. I am particularly pleased for my guys, who are doing a really great job with the pit stops right now. I had to defend pretty hard against Mike Rockefeller at the end, but it was just enough. Fifth place is better than expected, I am very pleased.”

Marco Wittmann will have the chance to go hunting for points again in two weeks in Misano. This is the first night race in the history of the DTM and promises to be a real highlight of the season.
