After a four-week summer break, the second half of the DTM season started this Saturday. The historic British racetrack at Brands Hatch was the venue for a DTM race weekend for the first time since 2013. Unlike in the past, this race took place on the Grand Prix circuit – a totally new experience for most of the drivers. This was the case for Marco Wittmann.
However, the 2014 and 2016 DTM champion approached the challenge in his usual confident manner and finished ninth to score two championship points. Wittmann started the race from ninth place before stopping on the second lap and returning to the same position. Heavy traffic meant that there were few overtaking opportunities on the circuit. The BMW driver defended his position in his BMW Driving Experience M4 DTM and claimed his seventh top 10 finish of the season.
“We stopped early, as planned. For some reason, we lost a lot of time through the pit stop phase and the slow zone”, said Marco Wittmann. “I can’t say right now what caused it – we still have to analyse that. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to do much more after that. But our pace today wasn’t so bad and that gives me confidence for tomorrow.”
Wittmann’s team-mate Augusto Farfus finished second and Philipp Eng secured fifth place to score more points for BMW. The second race of the weekend starts tomorrow at 14:30 German time. This will be preceded by the excitement of the 20-minute qualifying session, starting at 12:20.
