For the first time after three podiums in a row, Marco Wittmann missed out on finishing in the top 2, but celebrated picking up important points for the driver’s championship in the DTM. In the ninth race of the season in Zandvoort, Wittmann finished in seventh place at the end of a hotly-contested race.
Starting the race from sixth on the grid, Wittmann dropped down a place on the first lap and decided to make his mandatory pit shop after three laps. Unlike in the previous races, this didn’t turn out to be a winning strategy. After changing his tyres, the two-time DTM champion got stuck in the chasing pack once again and was unable to move any further up the field. And even a safety car phase about 25 minutes before the end didn’t change that, after which the field was pushed back together.
“It was a difficult race, which was dominated by Mercedes,” said Wittmann. “Despite the safety car phase, we were unable to attack the top spots. The four BMW in the top 10 were all at a similar level. But it is always a shame when you are unable to do better in the race.”
