From seventh place to first, excitement right to the finish and a delighted local hero: those were the ingredients for Sunday’s race at the Norisring. A magnificent chasing performance saw Marco Wittmann claim his second DTM win of the 2018 season. This was Wittmann’s first win in his home race, having already reached the podium at the Dutzendteich for the first time in Saturday’s race.
“I think my heart is still racing. These emotions are just crazy,” he said. “It’s not every day that you win your home race. I have been trying it here for so long and this is the first time it’s worked out. It is wonderful to be heading home from the Norisring with two trophies.”
Things had not looked too promising for Wittmann earlier in the day. A red flag in qualifying meant that he had to abandon what had been his fastest lap and after restarting, his tyres had cooled and he had no further opportunity to improve his starting position. Everything went much better in the race itself. The Franconian driver was in the pits early and battled his way forward, place by place. He took the lead on the 41st lap, after pit stops had been taken into account.
“I would never have thought that I’d manage to move up from seventh to first. We had a fantastic pace. I drove the race of my life – with some wild overtaking manoeuvres. My guys did an unbelievable job. The car was sensational.“
However, his many fans had to keep their fingers crossed right up to the finish. Wittmann had built up a comfortable lead but this shrank significantly during the final laps of the race before the delighted Franconian driver crossed the finishing line after 68 laps.
This win continues Wittmann’s upturn in form in the championship. After four podiums in the last five races and two wins in 2018, Wittmann is in third place in the drivers’ standings with 92 points.
