The spell is broken: Marco Wittmann can celebrate a podium finish at his home race for the first time in his DTM career. In a thrilling Norisring race on Saturday, the Fürth-born driver secured third place just a few kilometres from his parents’ house, prompting great celebrations amongst his fans.
“The podium finish at my home race is just a sensational feeling,” said Wittmann. „I started well and I was able to pass Philipp Eng. I then started to chase Edoardo Mortara from second place. I got really close to him early on and we had a great battle. But he was just a bit faster overall. Then Gary Paffett closed up on me and I had to let him pass. Nonetheless: it is just fantastic to get to the podium here at the Norisring, in front of my home fans and my family.”
The two-time champion had already provided a convincing performance in qualifying for the seventh DTM race of the 2018 season, enabling his BMW Driving Experience M4 DTM to start from third place on the grid. He was only slower than Edoardo Mortara and brand team-mate Philipp Eng – Wittmann was able to pass the latter at the start before making his first mandatory pit stop early in the race. After battling for first place with Edoardo Mortara, the two-time champion had to let Gary Paffett overtake him as the race progressed. In the final third of the race, Wittmann mounted a solid defence of his third place and crossed the finish line in the top 3, after 68 of the Norisring.
This third podium in the last four races continued Wittmann’s recent upturn in form and helped him to move up in the overall DTM standings: he is now in fifth place with 67 points.
