The Hungaroring did not prove to be a happy stomping ground for Marco Wittmann in Saturday’s DTM race in 2018. No BMW driver finished in the points, as the 2014 and 2016 DTM champion crossed the finish line in 16th place.
A downpour had resulted in wet conditions for the morning’s second free practice session. However, the track dried quickly, meaning the drivers were faced with completely different conditions in qualifying. Wittmann qualified 13th in the 20-minute session.
The race itself was dominated by various different pit stop strategies. Wittmann and BMW Team RMG opted to pit late but went unrewarded. In the end, Wittmann had to settle for 16th place.
“We had a different strategy to most of the other drivers. We stayed out there and hoped for rain,” said Wittmann. “But it did not come. In the bunch, when everyone has DRS, it is difficult to overtake. We had no chance today.”
