Success at the fourth attempt: in Sunday’s race at the Lausitzring, Marco Wittmann claimed his first podium finish of the 2018 season – the 21st of his DTM career for the two-time champion. “I am really satisfied. This second place does feel a bit like a win.” Saturday’s race did not go entirely to plan but Wittmann improved on the seventh-place finish on the second day of racing. He headed for the podium right from the start.
Wittmann first passed his BMW team-mate Philipp Eng and then pulled an unexpected trick: “We had a great race pace, I was able to attack Philipp early on and overtake him. After that, I was going round as well as Pascal Wehrlein. We had actually planned on stopping on the same lap as him. But I just decided to do it differently. I stayed out one lap longer and hoped to stay ahead of him. I actually managed to do that. After the pit stop, I noticed right away that I could go on the attack again. I got closer to Gary with each lap but there just weren’t enough laps in the race.“
The second place helped Wittmann to move up in the championship standings. After four races, he is in seventh place with 26 points. This was also the best result of the Franconian driver’s career at the Lausitzring. The season continues in two weeks when the DTM visits Budapest.
