Marco Wittmann and his BMW DTM team-mates have completed an eventful first race at the Lausitzring. After a series of incidents at the start, a safety car phase and a race stoppage, Wittmann was able to secure another seven valuable points in the third race of the season.
The 2016 and 2014 champion displayed good pace in qualifying and started the race from sixth place. A collision between the Audi drivers Nico Müller and Jamie Green heralded a safety car phase at the start of the race. Spectators and drivers saw a shocking scene during the subsequent IndyCar restart when René Rast was involved in a serious accident. Thankfully, the Audi driver was able to get out of his car unharmed. However, the race was stopped temporarily. After the restart, Wittmann drove a faultless race to claim seventh place – adding to the points already gained in Hockenheim.
“It was a very chaotic race“, said Wittmann. „I really hope that all the drivers involved in the accidents are doing fine. It looked really serious when René Rast flipped over. By the finish, it was all about stopping on the right lap as the field was so tightly-packed. Edoardo Mortara showed that perfect timing allowed you to make a big leap forward here.” The second race at the Lausitzring starts on Sunday, at the usual time of 13:30.
