Strong qualifying and difficult race at season opener

After the last DTM season ended almost perfectly for Marco Wittmann with his win in the final race, the 2018 season opener proved to be much more difficult. He got the second-fastest time in qualifying. However, he couldn’t do better than eleventh place in the race at the Hockenheimring.

From second on the grid, Marco Wittmann delivered a strong performance from the start and maintained his good starting position initially. However, as the race went on, Wittmann’s BMW Driving Experience M4 DTM lost pace, which saw the two-time DTM champion drop further and further down the field. Despite his great fighting spirit, he narrowly missed out on the points, finishing in eleventh place.

He was disappointed with the result: „I’m not sure myself what the issue was today,“ said Marco Wittmann. „I didn’t have the pace, and there was a great deal of tyre wear during the race. It was a difficult race, instead of moving up, I only dropped down the field. It is pretty disappointing to end up with no points when you start from second on the grid.“

Wittmann’s team-mates picked up points for BMW, with Timo Glock finishing in third place and Bruno Spengler in sixth. The second DTM race of 2018 gets underway at 1:30 p.m. CET tomorrow. Before that, the 20-minute qualifying session starting at 11:25 a.m. CET will provide the next set of thrills.
