The 2017 season could hardly have ended in a better manner for Marco Wittmann. Having been unable to launch any kind of assault on the podium positions in Saturday’s race at the Hockenheimring, the BMW Team RMG driver enjoyed a virtually perfect final race. In front of thousands of cheering fans, he crossed the finish line first to trigger fireworks and claim a dominant victory.
Even as early as qualifying, it was clear that the 2014 and 2016 DTM champion had upped his game compared to Saturday, as he produced an impressive drive to claim third place. Wittmann then kept a cool head in the somewhat chaotic start to climb into second place. He then moved into the lead after the round of pit stops and went on to claim his first win of the season. This was also the ninth DTM victory of Wittmann’s career.
Although he was unable to defend the title this year, Wittmann was delighted with his result after the race: “I am really happy. Every driver wants to end the season with a win,” said Wittmann. “I have been hungry for my first win of the season, ever since my victory in Zandvoort was disallowed. It feels fantastic to get it now. My team did a magnificent job. Thank you to the entire RMG crew, and congratulations to my successor René Rast.”
The title in the Drivers’ Championship went to Audi driver Rast. Marco Wittmann was fifth and the best-placed BMW driver with 160 points.
