Marco Wittmann’s dream of successfully defending his DTM title has come to a premature end. The BMW driver, at the wheel of the Red Bull BMW M4 DTM, had to settle for 13th place in the penultimate race of the 2017 season at the Hockenheimring. As such, his title defence is over.
Starting from eighth place, the 2016 DTM champion went all out to improve his position. However, it soon became clear that this was going to be a big ask on this particular day. Wittmann’s car did not have the pace required to stay in the points. As such, Wittmann cut a disappointed figure after the race: “Unfortunately, we were simply lacking pace today. For this reason, I found myself dropping back through the field, instead of making up positions. All in all, it was a disappointing race, but I hope we have a better day again tomorrow.”
Wittmann’s fellow BMW drivers Timo Glock, Maxime Martin and Bruno Spengler finished in the points, in third, fourth and tenth place. The final race of the season gets underway at 15:13 on Sunday.
