It could have been a dream weekend for Marco Wittmann. The 2014 and 2016 DTM champion followed his second place in Saturday’s race by crossing the finish line first in the Sunday race. However, he was disqualified after the race when the technical inspection failed to find the required amount of remaining fuel in the tank of his Red Bull M4 DTM.
Two hours beforehand, Wittmann had been spraying champagne on the podium and was beaming from ear to ear. He had been so delighted with his first win of the season and the prospect of moving into second place in the Drivers’ Championship. The victory would have put him right back in the title race.
It initially looked as though the champion had enjoyed a perfect Sunday. Following the qualifying session ahead of race twelve of the 2017 season, he started the rollercoaster ride in the Zandvoort dunes from second place on the grid. He took the lead at the start, and hung on to that position until he crossed the finish line. But then came the news of his disqualification.
He must now look ahead. The next two DTM races will be held as soon as 9th and 10th September, when Wittmann and BMW Team RMG will hope for more joy at their home event at the Nürburgring.
