DTM champion Marco Wittmann finished runner-up to claim another podium finish in a BMW one-two-three in Zandvoort. After 37 laps of racing, he was joined on the podium by winner Timo Glock and third-placed Maxime Martin, as the three BMW drivers celebrated a successful Saturday with the traditional champagne shower.
Wittmann had enjoyed a fine qualifying session earlier in the day. Having set his fastest lap time, the rain started to fall, giving the opposition no chance to improve on their times. As such, Wittmann had all but secured third place on the grid with five minutes of qualifying remaining. Only Augusto Farfus and pole-sitter Glock were quicker than Wittmann.
The reigning champion wasted little time in climbing into second place shortly after the start. “I did not get away perfectly at the start, but then braked later on the outside and was able to take second place. After that, I ultimately spent the race behind Timo,” said Wittmann. “We had very good pace and the car was well balanced. I am obviously happy with the points. Timo did a superb job today, starting with qualifying. This was a great success for BMW.”
The show in the dunes continues tomorrow when race 12 of the 2017 DTM season gets underway at 15:18. Wittmann is currently seventh in the Drivers’ Championship with 91 points, just 23 behind championship leader René Rast.
