Marco Wittmann finished in ninth place in Sunday’s race at the Lausitzring to claim two more points in the overall DTM standings. It was a difficult race for BMW as the reigning DTM champion recorded the second-best result for the Bavarian manufacturer in his Red Bull BMW M4 DTM.
Wittmann finished the 20-minute qualifying session on Sunday morning in tenth place to determine his starting position for the second race of the weekend. Wittmann had no chance to improve his position in heavy traffic at the start.
A clever choice of strategy, including a late pit stop, allowed Wittmann and his BMW Team RMG to make good some places. A thrilling duel with Mercedes driver Lucas Auer concluded with a successful defence of Wittmann’s position and he crossed the line in ninth place.
“I am fairly pleased with the result,” said Wittmann. “We did the best we could today. I had decent pace I was able to drive a long time before the first stop. I battled my way up to ninth, had a great contest with Lucas Auer and closed the gap to the cars ahead. However, the Audis were pretty much irresistible today. We still have plenty of work to do.”
Marco Wittmann has another highlight to look forward to before the DTM season continues in Budapest in June. The legendary 24-hour race is taking place at the Nürburgring next weekend. Wittmann will have the chance to prove his ability once again on the world’s most famous circuit.
