By finishing second in Saturday’s race in Zandvoort in his Red Bull BMW M4 DTM, Marco Wittmann extended his lead in the drivers’ Championship.
In the Zandvoort dunes, the BMW Team RMG driver once more impressed with a strong performance. Despite the fact he was only able to complete four laps in Friday’s first practice session due to a technical issue, the hard work of Wittmann and his team paid off and they were successful again on Saturday.
Wittmann, who won the Saturday race last year in Zandvoort, proved in the afternoon qualifying that this time he should be seen as a threat. He secured second place on the front row of the grid in his Red Bull BMW M4 DTM.
In the 40-minute sprint race, which was held in the early evening, he defended this position and drove onto the podium for the second time this season. With this result, he collected a further 18 points and extended his lead in the championship. Halfway through the season, after nine of 18 races, Wittmann has now an advantage of ten points over his closest rival.
“That was a very good day for us, particularly when you consider that the technical problem we had in practice on Friday meant we hardly did any driving. Despite this, we scored valuable points and defended the lead in the Drivers’ Championship,” Wittmann summed up.
Wittmann and BMW Team RMG will be in action again in Zandvoort tomorrow: the third free practice session is scheduled for 09.20, Sunday’s qualifying will begin at 11.20 and the tenth race of the season will be started at 13.43.
