Great comeback in Nürnberg: Starting 13th on the grid, Marco Wittmann finished fourth in Saturday’s race at Norisring and collected further championship points.
Marco Wittmann excited his fans at the Norisiring with another impressive performance in Saturday’s sprint race. The BMW Team RMG driver ended the first race of his home round in Nürnberg in fourth position, showing a strong comeback in his Red Bull BMW M4 DTM on the tight street circuit. After finishing the first free practice sessions in second and fifth respectively, Wittmann had to settle with 13th on the grid in the fiercely fought qualifying on Saturday morning.
But during the 40-minute race, he continuously progressed towards the front and took the chequered flag in fourth, being the best placed BMW driver. With this result, Wittmann scored 12 points and consolidated his second place in the championship.
“The best word I can think of to describe this result is ‘mega’,“ Wittmann summed up with a big smile in his face. „I had a good start from P13, then it is always incredibly close on the first turn here. I went for the inside line, and I think that was the right choice. I was able to make up positions and then benefitted from the hotheads in front of me – you need to keep a cool head at the front. In terms of pace, we were very, very fast. From 13th to fourth place – that doesn’t happen every day.”
The second qualifying on his home track will be scheduled for Wittmann tomorrow from 10.50 to 11.10, the 60-minute race will be started at 13.13.
