The weekend at the Norisring is always one of the highlights of the season for DTM fans – and it is the major home event for Marco Wittmann each year. The BMW driver was born just a few kilometres away from the street circuit with the historic stone grandstand, where he still lives today. So many of Marco’s friends and naturally a lot of his family will be there at the weekend to cheer him on.
This is something very special for the BMW Team RMG driver. He enjoys showing his friends and relatives the pit and his workstation, the BMW M4 DTM, even though his schedule is very tight and he needs to concentrate on his actual job, racing, right before the practice sessions and the races. But as a local hero in Nuremberg, he gets a special sensation that kicks in a few days in advance. He was already out and about in preparation for the race weekend on Monday; he was on hand to answer questions at a press conference with journalists and fans and visited the editorial offices of two radio stations in Nuremberg.
„I’m really looking forward to my home event. The atmosphere on and off the track is unique. I know a lot of people there, for example, the track marshals and the members of the Nuremberg motorsport club. And then there are the many friends and family members who come. And it is even better for me competing there on the back of good results and second place in the drivers‘ standings,“ said Wittmann.
He is just three points off of leading the championship in the DTM – and it would be a big dream for him to take this back in his Franconian home. To do so, he would need two good results on a track that has been extremely treacherous in the past. As easy as the track layout may appear with its two long straights, one chicane and two turns, the track is very challenging for the drivers. Nowhere else in the DTM do millimetres make the difference between a best time or crashing into the wall. The Norisring does not allow for any mistakes.
To date, Marco Wittmann’s best result in „Franconian Monaco“ is sixth place, where he previously celebrated victories in Formula 3. But now it’s about time for the first home podium on the fourth attempt as a DTM driver.
