Saturday at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg couldn’t have gone much better for Marco Wittmann. First, he got the fastest time in qualifying, which saw him claim pole position. Then in the race, he delivered a flawless performance in his Red Bull BMW M4 DTM and drove a start-finish victory. This saw Wittmann celebrate his first win of the 2016 season and the 70th victory overall for BMW in the DTM.
In glorious sunshine and summer temperatures, the 2014 DTM Champion proved once again that he is one of the top drivers in the very competitive DTM field, and is high up on the list of title contenders for 2016. The winner was accordingly over the moon afterwards.
“The Red Bull Ring seems to suit me very well. It really does treat me well. With the pole position and the good start, I laid the foundation for the win. Nevertheless, it was not easy to maintain the lead since my rivals were able to use the DRS. I’m very happy that it was enough to get the win – particularly for the team. They earned this success.”
And it wasn’t just Wittmann and his team who had a successful day with the win at sponsor Red Bull’s home race. Saturday’s race was also successful for BMW. In addition to Wittmann, Tom Blomqvist (second place), team-mate Timo Glock (fourth place), Martin Tomczyk (fifth place), Maxime Martin (sixth place) and Augusto Farfus (ninth place) also finished in the top 10, thereby showing a united, strong team performance.
The qualifying session on Sunday starts at 12:50 local time, with the race starting at 15:13 local time. When Marco Wittmann will go on the attack again and attempt to add even more points to his name.
