Marco Wittmann will start his fourth DTM season next weekend. This will be the first time that he will compete in the BMW M4 DTM bearing the Red Bull colours.
When he takes to the track for the first practice session on 6th May, it will mark that official start of the DTM season 2016, and the end of a long period of testing and waiting. The upcoming season represents a new start for Marco Wittmann, who is replacing the extremely successful Ice Watch design of his BMW M4 DTM with the colours of Red Bull. He will also be competing for the first time with his chosen start number 11, which is to become his trademark. „I’m starting a new chapter with this design in 2016,“ says Wittmann. „Red Bull is a recent, well-known brand, which suits me very well as a young driver. Red Bull has many athletes in its squad, and I am proud to also be one of them now.“
Wittmann celebrated victory in the season opener at Hockenheim in 2014, the year he went on to claim the title. Like all the other drivers, he knows this circuit like the back of his hand. „For me, Hockenheim is an institution, as the opening and closing leg of the DTM season,“ he says. „Few other circuits are as closely associated with the tradition of the DTM as the Hockenheimring. Therefore, I am so delighted we can now get back down to business at this circuit. All the drivers know this track inside out from all the countless tests and races. As a driver, this possibly makes it more difficult to make a difference here than at other circuits.“
His goal for 2016: Be involved in the battle for the title once again. „But to be up there in the running for the drivers’ title again in 2016, we need to try to find our way back to our performance in 2014,“ he says. „Particularly in qualifying, where it’s all about the pace of the car. I think that is crucial in the DTM; if you are at the front, you have better chances of picking up plenty of points. With that in mind, the focus is clearly on improving the performance of the car and being able to make even better use of the potential of the BMW M4 DTM.“
