After Marco Wittmann’s weekend got off to a promising start on Saturday with seventh place, the race on Sunday ended in disappointment for the reigning DTM Champion.
After 43 laps, he finished in 18th place. His team-mate Maxime Martin was unable to build on the previous day’s victory, coming home in 13th place.
Qualifying did not go according to plan for Wittmann. However, tenth place in the Ice-Watch BMW M4 DTM was a good starting position, from which to pick up points in race two. But luck wasn’t on the Franconian’s side today: After coming into contact with other cars several times in the tussle at the start, Wittmann was forced to return to the BMW Team RMG pit with a flat tyre. He dropped to the back of the field, but was at least able to finish the race.
„The race today was a disappointment for me. I was hit hard two or three times in the first turn. The car was already badly damaged at this point. After that I had a puncture. I finished the race anyway – after all, you never know what might happen. But I was basically fighting a losing battle,“ said the reigning champion.
After 16 of 18 races, Wittmann is sixth in the DTM Drivers’ Championship with 104 points. At the season finale in Hockenheim on 17th and 18th October, the main task facing the 25-year-old and his BMW colleagues is to defend first place in the manufacturers’ standings.
