Terrific start to the Nürburg weekend for Marco Wittmann’s BMW Team RMG: The reigning DTM champion came home seventh to pick up points in the opening race in „Hell“. His team-mate Maxime Martin claimed the race victory. After 25 laps, the Belgian was the first to cross the finish line at the wheel of the SAMSUNG BMW M4 DTM.
Wittmann and his team have a turbulent first home appearance behind them. An accident involving Audi drivers Jamie Green and Miguel Molina in the early stages saw the BMW M4 Coupé DTM Safety Car take to the track. However, so much oil had spread over the asphalt that the race organisers stopped the 15th race of the season for safety reasons. The race remained thrilling after the restart.
„There were plenty of duels, collisions and accidents – but it was fun,“ said Wittmann. „I dropped back a bit at the start, but then I was able to make up six places on one lap. Ultimately we can be happy with the outcome of the race. Maxime won at our home event. Congratulations! I finished seventh. That’s a good team result. Now we need to make sure that I am further up the field in qualifying tomorrow so that I can go on full attack again.“
The second qualifying session at the Nürburgring will be held at 10:55 a.m. on Saturday. Race two gets underway at 1:38 p.m.
