He gave it his all, but more was simply not possible: In the 13th race of the 2015 DTM season, Marco Wittmann finished sixth to pick up eight points. The champion was unable to make up any more places at the narrow Motorsport Arena Oschersleben.
Wittmann and BMW Team RMG had a turbulent day behind them: First, the start times of the DTM sessions in the Magdeburg Börde were delayed several times due to dense fog, making it impossible to drive. When qualifying finally got underway at 12 p.m., the BMW drivers showed good pace. Pole position went to Timo Glock, and Wittmann was also fast. However, he was obstructed by another driver on his fastest lap, meaning that he was forced to make do with seventh place after 20 minutes.
„It definitely made the difference,“ said Wittmann in retrospect. „In terms of pace, we could have been further forward today. But it wasn’t easy from seventh place.“ Wittmann followed Mercedes driver Pascal Wehrlein after two safety car phases, which lasted several laps, and, despite DRS, was unable to attempt any crucial overtaking manoeuvre on the narrow track. Meanwhile, Glock, Bruno Spengler, António Félix da Costa and Augusto Farfus clinched a top-four shut-out for BMW. „Congrats to the guys at the top. As I’ve already said, I would obviously have loved to be up there with them. But we have a second chance tomorrow.“
