The picturesque landscape of the Styria region of Austria provides the backdrop for races 15 and 16 of the DTM season this weekend. Saturday’s race at the Red Bull Ring saw Marco Wittmann finish fifth in sunny conditions. As such, the reigning champion was the best-placed BMW driver.

The talk of the DTM coming into the race weekend in Spielberg was the abolition of performance weights. For the first time in 2017, all 18 cars in the field were the same weight. After thick fog in the morning, Wittmann managed to qualify fourth in good conditions. He was able to defend fourth place in the opening laps, but could not prevent Robert Wickens (Mercedes) from passing him later in the race. Wittmann came in for a tyre change on lap 12, and continued to battle for position after the crew at BMW Team RMG had fit a new set of slicks. However, despite Wittmann’s fighting spirit, he was unable to pull off a decisive overtaking manoeuvre. After 55 minutes of racing, he crossed the finish line in fifth place.
The action at the Red Bull Ring resumes at 12:00 tomorrow with the weekend’s second qualifying session. The race in the Styria region gets underway at 15:18. The DTM then heads from Spielberg to the Hockenheimring, which will host the season finale on 14th and 15th October.
