Marco Wittmann has taken another step closer to his dream of winning a second Drivers’ title in the DTM. Second place in Saturday’s race saw him extend his lead over Edoardo Mortara to 17 points. Fifth place in the final race of the year would be enough to see Wittmann crowned champion.
For long stretches of the penultimate race of 2016, Wittmann looked set to wrap up the title with one race to spare. He was able to climb from fourth on the grid into second place early on in the race. With Mortara stuck behind Wittmann’s team-mate Timo Glock in eighth place, the title was within touching distance. However, the Audi driver then fought back to finish third. As such, the destination of the title will be decided on Sunday.
Wittmann finished on the podium for the sixth time this season, and his summary of race 17 of the season was a positive one: “That was a good race for us. On the whole, we had good pace and second place means we gained another three points on Edoardo Mortara. That was important,” he said. “You have to acknowledge that he also drove a good race. Despite this, I am well-placed for tomorrow’s season finale. I continue to focus solely on doing my job in the cockpit.
The deciding race gets underway at 15:18 tomorrow at the Hockenheimring.
